Artist's Comments

First in a series of posters I painted in Photoshop for display in the ad casings above urinals. Photo reference used. Kind of a bizarre subject, but it was a lot of fun to paint. ;) (Wink)

---

Just a note that this wasn't traced or photomanipulated, it's a freehand painting. As you'll see in [link] , it's actually pretty loose, and didn't take all that long to do.

---

I've gotta say thanks to everyone, but the few people making accusations of this being traced, filtered or photomanipulated are way off base. Like I mentioned above, it IS based on a photo. Meaning that I looked at a photo, then looked at a blank Photoshop canvas, then painted it.

As to the question "why paint this?" I'll say that I'm not usually a fan of photo-realistic painting, but it was called for in this project, so I did it. I painted it because I'm a painter. If I was a sculptor, I would have sculpted it.

To be more specific than my earlier comments, it took about 10 hours to paint. If you don't believe this kind of things is possible, check out [link] . Craig Mullins created those images in as little as 1 or 2 hours in some cases, using Painter or Photoshop. I don't compare myself to him, but you can see that painting doesn't have to be a long, laborious process.

Finally, here are some shots of various layers in the painting. [link] [link] [link] . And here is a detail of the chrome. [link] . If you think that a filter can do this, I think you give Photoshop a little too much credit. I could also point out a lot of little perspective errors, but that's kind of damaging to the ego. ;) (Wink)

Cheers,

Jeff

Urinal Lobster by jeffery is by far the most original digital painting I've seen this year. It made me laugh just for being so weird. Hahahhaha.. laugh with me! (Selected by $matteo) (Featured by °matteo)

Wow. I love the painting work involved as well as the bizarre idea. This is definately an addition to my favorites.

What makes this even more fantastic is the fact that this is being displayed above urinals. It'll give plenty of people something to look at. ;) (Wink)

yeah, the lobster doesn't mesh too well in the on-screen version. it's tweaked so that it'll come out better when printed, since this is a print job. stupid color correction.
